Pride, Pemberley, and Second Chances

When history-loving Olivia Bennett’s teaching contract isn’t renewed, she is considered her family’s logical choice to care for her ailing grandmother in a tiny English village. While there, she soon finds additional work at nearby Hartbury Hall—one of England’s great houses once used as Pemberley in a filmed production of Pride and Prejudice. The head gardener there, however, proves to be anything but the gentlemanly hero of that famous book. Little does she know that behind Liam Browne’s brusque exterior is both a family tragedy and a legacy that demands truth and honor, creating a crisis that only Liv’s vivacious determination can resolve. Along the way, she may just learn that appearances count for naught. . .and that love can be found in unexpected ways.

My Review

“The gardens might be open, but they didn’t exactly scream hospitable, seeing the path needed a good weeding, and scuffed patches showed where the white gravel needed replacing. As she drew nearer to the house, her heart shaded with sadness. Wooden shutters closed the house in darkness, and browned leaves lodged against the front door suggested it hadn’t been used in months. The place was quiet, eerily still, save for a bird whose call she couldn’t place.”
When Liv arrives in England to help her grandmother recover from surgery, she didn’t expect to have time on her hands. she definitely did not expect to be close to the estate where one of the most iconic scenes from the movie, Pride and Prejudice was filmed. Unfortunately, Hartbury Hall is in disrepair, and the gardener is less than welcoming.
After years of heartbreak, Liam isn’t sure how to move forward. Everything is in disrepair. The nosy Aussie is certainly not helping. But then he realizes that perhaps Liv is synonymous with hope. Can he learn to trust her? And can she forgive him when she finds out the truth surrounding the estate?
This contemporary romance is loosely connected to Jane Austen and to “Pride and Prejudice.” Since I am not an aficionado, perhaps I missed some of the parallels. But I did truly enjoy this story for its own merits! The small town community, the manor and the main characters were all delightful!
I did get to read an advanced copy of this book for a tour. I wanted to read and review it. All opinions are my own.
