Growing up in the 1970’s, my childhood Christmas carols involved orchestras, Ralph Charmichael and the Hawaiins. All on records, of course. Back then, traditional songs were played more often on the radio too. All during the Christmas season, one could find songs about Jesus. “Mary’s Boy Child” was still considered to be a “new” Christmas song then.
Back in 1956, Harry Belafonte is the one who first recorded “Mary’s Boy Child.” I am guessing that I grew up listening to his version or possibly the Andy Williams one. (My Mom is a fan!) “Mary’s Boy Child” really is a beautiful song.
But I must say that I was quite excited to discover a new rendition of this now classic song on Toby Mac’s “Christmas in Diverse City” album. With Jamie Grace lending her beautiful voice, this song is destined to stay around. Enjoy this song!
Mary’s Boy Child
Long time ago in Bethlehem, so the Holy Bible say
Mary’s boy child, Jesus Christ, was born on Christmas dayHark, now hear the angels sing, a King is born today
And man will live forevermore, because of Christmas dayWhile shepherds watched their flocks by night
They saw a brand new shining star
They heard a choir sing, the music seemed to come from afarHark, now hear the angels sing, a King is born today
And man will live forevermore, because of Christmas dayNow Joseph and his wife, Mary, come to Bethlehem that night
They found no place to bear her child, not a single room in sight
And then they found a little nook in a stable all forlorn
And in a manger, cold and dark, Mary’s little boy was bornHark, now hear the angels sing, a King is born today
And man will live forevermore, because of Christmas day
